Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options for, as well as how to talk to your child and others, about safe storage of firearms.
In 2021, 4,613 Texans experienced gun-related deaths. The Texas Department of State Health Services (SHS) reports that 55% of Texas firearms deaths in 2020 were suicides and that 59% of all suicides in Texas were by firearms. Suicide attempts involving firearms have a 90% fatality rate. Restricting access to guns is critical in reducing acts of violence, whether as self-harm or towards others. Acts of mass violence and interpersonal violence often end in suicide.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
• Failed to secure the firearm; or
• Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two).
Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax.
Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com.
Safe gun storage is critical to preventing suicide, unintentional shootings, and other tragedies.

Today, Woodlake Elementary School conducted a practice LOCKDOWN Drill today. LOCKDOWN drills are conducted to ensure students and staff practice the Standard Response Protocols and know how to respond should a LOCKDOWN occur at our school.
Our students and staff did an excellent job during the drill, and we will debrief with our local first responders to continue to identify any areas for improvement. Thank you for your continued support.

As we wrap up our first week of school, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our students, families, and staff for helping make it a successful start to the year. We appreciate your patience, flexibility, and support as we work through our dismissal procedures and establish safe routines for everyone.
A friendly reminder that while our dismissal bell rings at 2:50 p.m., it takes approximately 10 minutes for students to transition from classrooms, travel through the building, and get safely to their designated dismissal areas. Our goal is not speed, but ensuring that every child is dismissed safely and accounted for each day.
The safety of our students is always our top priority. As we continue to refine our procedures, we ask for your partnership by practicing safe driving habits in and around our campus. Please follow traffic patterns, avoid distractions, be mindful of crosswalks, and remain patient with fellow drivers, staff members, and families. We will be training a few staff members to be crosswalks, but we would gladly take any help from the community willing to volunteer.
We also encourage everyone to extend a little extra kindness and grace during these first few weeks. New routines take time, and together we can create a positive and safe environment for all of our students.

We will be making significant changes to our arrival and dismissal procedures for the 2026-2027 school year. Please help us ensure the safety of all students by following our traffic plan during arrival and dismissal.
The car rider line begins at the back of the school on Lake Bend East, we will open the gate 2:00, vehicles will merge into the drive at that time, we will begin dismissal promptly at 2:50.
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES-Important Reminder
Pre-K and Kindergarten students will no longer be dismissed from the front of the school. All Pre-K and Kindergarten students will be dismissed through the gym as regular car riders unless they ride the bus, daycare transportation, Adventure Club, or another approved after-school program.
Please have your car rider tag visible during dismissal. For the safety of our students, all vehicles must display the assigned car tag on the dashboard. We also ask that parents remain in their vehicles while in the dismissal lane.
All Pre-K through 5th grade students will be designated as car riders unless otherwise noted as bus riders, daycare riders, Adventure Club participants, or WKPR Church program participants.
Walkers must use the sidewalks and walk home safely. The walker area is not a location for car rider pickup, students will be walked to the designated crosswalk of Lake Bend West and Woodlake Club and Lake Bend East.
There will be no early dismissals after 2:30 p.m. Additionally, walk-up pickups will not be permitted during the dismissal process.
Please ensure your car rider tag is clearly displayed on your dashboard each day during dismissal.
